Introduction

Blaise Castle Estate is a magnificent 650acre Grade II listed parkland in north-west Bristol. With over 5000 years of history, dozens of natural and man-made attractions and a substantial dog-free play area, Blaise remains a firm favourite with children from all over the south-west. The already hugely popular play area has recently been improved with government Play Pathfinder funding.

Access

Blaise Castle Estate is on the north western edge of Bristol, five miles from the city centre. The main estate entrance is on Kingsweston Road where there is a large free car park. The main entrance is also on a bus route. The play area is flat with plenty of paths providing good access for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

Facilities and activities:

The large play area, which is located close to the Kingsweston Car Park is split into a play area for younger children and a play area for older children. The facilities for younger children are located adjacent to the Blaise café and toilets and include sand play, climbing frames, a slide, swings and picnic area with picnic tables. Adjacent is a large play area for older children with climbing towers, tube slides, a zip wire, high swings, a tree house climbing frame, basket swing, roundabout, seesaw, trampoline, speaking tubes and picnic benches set in a large area of grass. Both play areas are fenced so as to be dog free.

Recent developments:

Major improvements to the Blaise Park play area were completed in 2009 under the Play Pathfinder programme funded by the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

This site was chosen as a site for investment under the Pathfinder programme through an assessment process, which involved a review of location, appropriate size, visibility, recent investment (or lack of), relationship to other regeneration programmes, child density and expected relationship within the emerging Plans for the Parks and Green Space Strategy.

The budget for the site was determined by the size and potential scope of the project in relation to the Pathfinder resources, together with the identification of any additional funding available from sources other than Pathfinder.
