Brandon Hill Park, Bristol, BS1 5PY

Neighbourhood Partnership Area:

Cabot, Clifton and Clifton East

Introduction

A couple of minutes walk from the city centre, Brandon Hill may be the oldest municipal open space in the country, coming into the posession of Bristol Corporation in 1174. Brandon Hill is one of Bristol’s most popular summer picnic spots with plenty to interest everyone, panoramic views of the city and docks, and spectacular sunsets. Brandon Hill Park is open all day, all year round. Access to the park is from Great George Street (off Park Street), Jacob Wells Road and Berkeley Square – two minutes walk from the centre promenade.

Access

The play area, located towards the bottom of the hill is accessible from the footpath running between entrances on Jacob’s Wells Road and Queen’s Parade. Due to the very hilly nature of the site, access may be challenging for people with disabilities and for wheelchair users. There is very limited parking in adjacent roads.

Facilities and activities

The small play area comprises a dog-free sand pit play area for under 12s with toddler swing and climbing frame. Outside are swings, a monkey bar climbing frame and a new climbing frame with nautical themed rigging and crows nests for older children.

Recent developments

The new climbing frame was installed in the play area in spring 2010 under the Play Pathfinder programme funded by the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

This site was chosen as a site for investment under the Pathfinder programme through an assessment process, which involved a review of location, appropriate size, visibility, recent investment (or lack of), relationship to other regeneration programmes, child density and expected relationship within the emerging Plans for the Parks and Green Space Strategy.

The budget for the site was determined by the size and potential scope of the project in relation to the Pathfinder resources, together with the identification of any additional funding available from sources other than Pathfinder.
